“The landscape belongs to those that look at it”
The Bushveld Flower Reserve, adjacent to the Aloe Cabins, was created in the interest of preserving a fascinating piece of vegetation on the Marais Family farm, bordering the Sundays River.
Filled with a wide variety of succulents, geophytes and thorny woody plants, the Reserve is a good example of Mesic Valley thicket, Nama Karoo and Riverine Acacia thicket and some Grassveld.
Designed to demonstrate the different vegetation, 3 trails have been laid out – the Aloe, the Fossil and the Bushpig, all of about 2,5km long.
As your guide, Charles Marais offers relaxed walks through the veld where you will hear all about interesting bushveld plants, including their ecology, folklore and medicinal value.
Excellent bird watching can be enjoyed along the trails with over 200 species recorded in the Reserve, including the majestic African Fish Eagle!
A variety of small animals can also be seen.
Guided walks available on request. Booking essential.
